Formerly known as Andhra Pradesh Open University, Dr. B.R.Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) offers higher education catering to students of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The University which was set up on 26th August 1982, received its present name on 26th October, 1991. Open University has helped a lot of people like women who could not continue higher education, unskilled labourers, jawans and prison inmates. BRAOU offers that excellent opportunity to all to help complete their education. The University has more than 213 study centres spread across both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, including 23 regional co-ordination centres and 14 centres for women. Even prison inmates under life sentence can enroll themselves as students and pursue education through exclusive study centres at Central Prison - Cherlapally, Warangal, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Kadapa and Nellore.
